Sustainable garden tech: recycled glass powder

That article reminded me of a documentary I saw a while back where they were squeezing seeds into a ball of this biochar and spreading them in regions that were barren. They were probably also putting a little fertilizer into the biochar mix. Anyway, the "shell" of biochar around the seed supposedly really helps the seed get going in places that they have a bit of a struggle.
 
Similar but there are a couple of important differences: 1) It's not mined, like perlite; it's made from recycled glass. 2) Unlike perlite, it's microporous, so it actually holds water inside its structure. Perlite aids more in drainage and aeration than in water retention.
