Stuff to watch on mushrooms...

Butcher Bob

Lone Wolf
Forward
I've been debating building this thread here for a while now. Finally I thought, eh, why not...it'll give me something to work on.
There are plenty of "lists" on-line of movies to watch when tripping, but I've always thought they were hit or miss and often overlooked really good ones. So over the last couple years, I've been developing my own list, which is just a few shy of 100 now. For each movie I try to explain why I think it's good, because not all movies are for everyone...tastes vary. I'll also try to provide a trailer, links to freebie sites for the full movie (if possible), and indicate if it is available on streaming services that you may already subscribe to. This is all posted elsewhere, but instead of just making one big dump, I'm going to try to spread it out over a regular basis because it's an ongoing project. That will allow me the time to do revisions and check all the links to make sure they work...copyright often gets freebie links canned. Let's get started with the first three...

Stuff to watch on mushrooms...
...aka... Bob's trippin' 😵‍💫

I think we're all aware of the wonders of tripping in nature...so many visuals to amaze us.
But, the weather is not always conducive...and sometimes we might not feel like tripping outside.
Many times I feel like grabbing a comfy couch, turning off the lights, and finding something stimulating to watch on the TV.
There are many qualities that contribute to an enjoyable experience, but overall what I look for is something surreal.

I'll start with one that lays down a pretty good example of what I'm referring to...
...good music, sharp and high contrast color, stellar cinematography, a storyline that steps outside reality...

Sucker Punch (2011)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...
...or can be rented on a few streaming services.

I kind of use that as a benchmark, both as to how and when it was made.
Generally speaking, older productions don't have the same quality as modern techniques afford.
You can still find older gems, they're just not as frequent.
On a recent trip I was surprised how well this one held up...

The Fifth Element (1997)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...
...or...
...or...
...or can be seen/rented on numerous streaming services.

While there are certainly more goldies out there, newer ones are more prevalent.
Technical production quality has increased significantly, and the cost has dropped.
You no longer need huge box office success to garner a good surrealistic experience...

The Wave (2019)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or can be seen/rented on numerous streaming services.

The Wave is a very good flick DMAN. (y) My brother found that for one of our trip sessions...it was much better than I expected.

Right on Midwest...a ticket to fly.😁

I should have mentioned, some of the freebie links might be a bit whack-a-mole with ads, but I try not to use the really bad ones.
I should also mention that you can google the name of the movie to find out what streaming services currently have the movie.
To give the thread a jump start, I decided to post the next three movies today as well...

...on the use of neon and colored lighting...

Usually I'm just looking for something that's visually stimulating...
...I'm not really looking for an intricate, in-depth story line...
...and definitely no sub-titles. Reading is more work than I want to do. :p
Trippy visuals like neon and colored lighting are often enough for me...

Terminal (2018)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...
...or...
...or...
...or can be seen/rented on numerous other streaming services.

It helps to have the big names...recognizable faces and all that...
...but outrageous looking sets can have a big effect too...

This Game's Called Murder (2021)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...
...or...
...or...
...or...
...or can be seen/rented on a few other streaming services.

But you don't need big names or special sets to make the neon and colored lighting work.
Really all you need are good cinematic shots and angles, with a touch of creativity...

The Peacemakers (2021)

This is a personal favorite. (y)
At the beginning of the movie it declares and then denies that it was made for people on drugs.

Teaser trailer:

5Th Element is fantastic to trip to.

Check out Split. about a rapid cycling dissociative disorder dude who abducts girls........ excellent movie - the acting is fantastic.

Heavy Metal is always a good old one.

I love tripping to Star War - episodes 3-6 and Rogue One

Lord of the Rings trilogy too

Mcavoy is great in Split. I’m partial to those psych thrillers, and time travel

I have seen Split, good movie...but I'm going to hard pass as a tripping movie. I've watched psychological thrillers that use terror as their form of horror...for me, they do not sit well with tripping.
Heavy Metal is coming.
Star Wars and Lord of the Rings episodes are on my list to review for consideration...just haven't gotten to them yet.
No matter how it turns out, I like hearing other folks' suggestions.(y)

CARTOONS
Some folks grow out of 'em....some folks never do.

At some point I think we've all smoked up and zoned out watching cartoons. There are a lot of different aspects of cartoons that I still enjoy...the styles of artwork, the sound track music, the storylines, the humor, etc.
For both of these, the trailers and full movies can be hard to nail down...today they work, tomorrow who knows.

Redline (2009)

This is another personal favorite. (y)
This movie has a crisp graphic style with vivid colors, an awesome exhilarating sound track, and decent humor throughout.
Just make sure you have the English dubbed version.

Trailer:
(the trailer uses the Japanese sound track for the movie clip)

Full movie:
...or...
...or...
...or currently only available for rent at Fandango.

Afro Samurai (2007)

Another one with great artwork and a deep storyline. I had seen this before and thought it was good, but the last time I watched it I was heavy into some 'shrooms and cannabis brownies...the story seemed so much deeper than I had remembered...

The graphic novel movies...

...they just have that feel to the visuals.
They don't look like live action...
...they look more like a fluid comic book...

Sin City (2005)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...
...or can be seen/rented on numerous other streaming services.

The original hit it out of the park...a Frank Miller classic.
Even though it's mostly black & white, the color highlights really set things off.
The sequel wasn't quite as good as the first, but still right up there...

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...
...or...

...or can be seen/rented on several other streaming services.

Even when done in color, the movie can be done to look more like a moving illustration.
This is one of my favorite movies...tripping or not...
...be sure to watch the 3½ hour director's cut...

Watchmen (2009)

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp toy with my childhood memories...

Any number of Burton's movies would probably be good to trip to...
...but these two in particular stand out to me.
I think it's because of their familiarity...
...you can miss bits and pieces, and still not be lost.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Trailer:

Full movie:

I always thought Gene Wilder had the perfect amount of 'weird' to play Willy Wonka...
...turns out Depp could up the ante...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Trailer:

Full movie:

Which Tim Burton films would you like to trip to?

Oh we'll definitely be hitting up some Bakshi.
But for now, a brand new entry to the list...fresh off the experience...

Whoa.....that's a trip...

Each for it's own reasons, but unexpected none the less.
Plenty of 'didn't see that coming' to mess with your mind.

John Dies at the End (2012)

Trailer:

Freakshow mentioned the original, and both are on the list...

CARTOONS...

Heavy Metal is a classic...one of the best movie soundtracks.
Discovered this in high school...we used to drop micro dot and go watch it at the midnight show.
Later in college my cousin turned me on to the magazine...bought that for years.
Couple decades later Heavy Metal 2000 came out...not quite up to par with the original, but still a good watch.

Heavy Metal (1981)

Not this one...

Had a friend visit from out of state one Friday evening. He brought 'The Professor" with him. The Prof didn't like this movie and ran away, we had to go look for him and bring him back. We didn't see the rest of that movie.

:p Yeah, there are lots of genres that work well, but horror doesn't tend to be one of them.
Here are some different types that do work...

Three very different experiences...

So far, I've just been looking at fantasy type entertainment.
But we all know reality/nature is trippy enough...
...it's just a matter of perspective.
This one makes most of these "lists", but know, it's not all beauty...

Samsara (2011)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...

Shifting gears...humor...
As a kid, I loved watching those old kung fu movies.
This is a hilarious parody of that type of movie...

Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

Trailer:

Full movie:
...or...

...and yet another perspective...
...like a first person shooter video game...
...but more realistic, yeah...
...more of a, umm...rush...

The genre consensus is anything but...

It's been movies so far.....but the title of the thread says "Stuff".
So occasionally I'll also be adding other things...
...videos...tv shows...as long as they're a good watch on mushrooms.
(Links for series will be very limited, as they are harder to find freebies for.)
For instance, for the last few years, there have been some visually trippy TV shows.
For me it started with...

Happy! (2 seasons 2017-2019)

Trailer season 1:

Trailer season 2:

Season 1 shows:

Season 2 shows:

...or can be seen/rented at several other streaming services.

...great cinematography, hilarious writing.
The next one utilizes camera angles, framing of the shots, etc....
...in addition to color and style of the sets...

Legion (3 seasons 2017-2019)

Trailer season 2:

Trailer season 3:

Season 2 shows:

Season 3 shows:

Legion was easy to get hooked into...hard to stop watching.
The latest show I've gotten into, has great visuals and music...
...but plays more on the characters...
...they are 'not normal', each has their oddities...

Russian Doll (2 seasons 2019-2022)

Trailer season 1:

Trailer season 2:

Season 2 shows:

...and speaking of rock 'n' roll...

The Heavy Metal movies have already been put up...
...time for a couple more classic rock 'n' roll movies...

Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982)

This was another movie that was a regular at the midnight flicks when I was young.
Friends and I smoked up and/or tripped to it many times.

Trailer:

Yellow Submarine (1968)

This is a movie I saw on TV as a very young child...I mostly just remembered the blue meanies.
Then a couple years ago I rewatched it on a mushroom trip....WOW, another personal favorite. (y)

Trailer:

First time I ever took mushrooms, buddy and I split a 7.xx gram cubensis, we somehow managed to make it to the movie theater where we somehow managed to select, pay for, and sit down for a movie before it started. The movie? Starship Troopers. We somehow managed to sit through the whole thing with watering eyes wide open and giants grins on our face the entire time.

What a wild ride.
